THE MET GALA 2025

SUPERFINE: TAILORING BLACK STYLE

A DEEP DIVE INTO THE THEME THAT WILL GO DOWN IN FASHION HISTORY

THOUGHTS

Dandyism: a style or manner characterized by meticulous attention to personal appearance, often seen as a form of self-expression and and rebellion against societal norms.

This year’s Met Gala was about far more than turning on the red carpet livestream to make aesthetically informed best dressed lists.

BEST DRESSED

COLMAN DOMINGO

IN VALENTINO

Pearl details in the jacket bringing texture to pinstripe, a medley of patterns on top harmoniously paired with monochromatic bottoms, a nod to André Leon Talley in the cape - Colman Domingo understood the assignment. The handkerchief and broach in the stars jacket bring the pristine yet personal elements of dandyism to the carpet. Colman’s look also paid homage to a pivotal moment of Black fashion history: the shade of his cape matching the same bright blue color worn by freed slaves to mark their triumph.

A$AP ROCKY

IN AWGE

Streetwear meets dandyism with A$AP’s marmot-inspired jacket and suiting. Who better to design this look than A$AP himself, using his childhood in Harlem as inspiration for this modern-day rendition of the theme. A pair of Ray Bans the natural choice to finish this look, following the brands recent revamp under A$AP’s creative direction. In every element of this look you can see A$AP’s influence, and in my book that earns him a spot on my best dressed list.

LEWIS HAMILTON

IN WALES BONNER

One of the things I love most about Wales Bonner is the attention to detail - the small elements of expert craftsmanship add the perfect texture to her looks. This collaboration used materials like ivory and cowrie to mark ancestral memory. In Hamilton’s words, “They are markers of identity, protection, and reverence.” Speaking from his role as co-chair for this milestone theme, Hamilton sums it up simply: “We’ve always been here. We’ve always been fly. And now, we’re being seen.”

TEYANA TAYLOR

IN RUTH E. CARTER

The name of this look perfectly sums up it’s effect: “A Rose Out of Concrete”.

AYO EDEBIRI

IN FERRGAMO

RIHANNA

IN MARC JACOBS

ZENDAYA

IN LOUIS VUITTON

This look is a prime example of dandyism as an aura - it’s created by how you wear the clothes, not just the clothing itself. While Zendaya’s look may be simple, it’s tailored perfection demands attention.

While this look itself wasn’t my favorite, I had to take a moment to appreciate the presence of Virgil’s work at this Met Gala. He was the embodiment of the self-expression and vision encompassed by the theme.

The elements of this look are great, but I would change the shape. I love the idea of torn suit fabric, fringe and crisp white cuffs. These details made into a structured oversized suit with an oversized maroon tie featuring her broach may have made my best dressed list.

Before you call me crazy, I included this look for the idea of outlining suit layers using fabric. While this execution missed the mark, Janelle Monáe nailed it.
